BANKING SYSTEM REMAINS PROFITABLE, HAVING A CERTAIN PROVISION OF STRENGTH
29-03-2021
March 29, 2021 Rating agency “Standard-Rating” (Ukraine) summed up the results of its thirty second «Reliability rating of banking deposits». The results of the 2020 year indicate that the Ukrainian banking system confidently demonstrates the signs of the economic crisis impact, which appeared due to virus COVID-19. The GDP decrease by 4% - it’s significantly better, than anticipated at the IMF (-7,2%), at the government (-4,2%) and NBU (-4,6%), but still such decrease should affect the quality of the banks’ loan portfolios. Obviously, the peak of such impact will come in 2021. For now, the data of 2020 year look optimistic: the share of non-performing loans in loan portfolios (NPLs) of Ukrainian banks decreased by 5,61 p. p., and in the portfolios of banks participating in the rating, the share of NPLs decreased down to 19,86%. Total volume of the banks’ profit after taxation for the 2020 year amounted to almost UAH 41,3 bn, UAH 36 bn. of which were earned for the 9 months of 2020. The volume of net interest income exceeded UAH 84,4 bn, and the volume of net commission income — UAH 46,5 bn. The 38 banks from the 56 ones, which participated in the rating, showed the NPL level decrease, none of the 56 banks had a negative net interest income, but the 5 banks had losses. The banks demonstrated a downward trend of profitability, although the number of unprofitable banks in the rating increased to five, against the background of the decrease in interest rates on loans and deposits. Additionally, the weakest banks left the banking system: Mistobank and bank “Arkada”. That is, the crisis is still gradually affecting the banking system, but such an impact is not systemic.
