The results of the first quarter of 2026 indicate that the banking system of Ukraine continued to grow and the trend towards its profitable operation was maintained. Though the consolidated profit after taxation of the banking system in the first quarter of 2026 amounted to only 26 billion UAH compared to 40 billion UAH for the first quarter of 2025, but one should take into account that in 2026 year the bank profit tax rate was increased to 50%, while in 2025 the rate was 25%. About 65% of the consolidated profit of the banking system was accounted for the profit of state-owned banks, while according to the results of 2025 this indicator was approximately 50%. The decrease in the profitability of the non-state share of the banking sector was probably due primarily to the increased profit tax for Ukrainian banks.

The 8 banks of the 58 ones finished the first quarter of 2026 year with a loss while according to the results of the 2025 year only 5 banks were unprofitable.

For the 2025 year the share of non-performing loans (NPLs) in loans on the banking system in general decreased from 30,29% down to 13,92%, on bank loans with private capital – from 12,54% down to 8,37%. For the first quarter of 2026 year the NPL share on the system in general fell down to 12,92%, and the NPL share in banks with private capital decreased down to 7,73%. The improvement of the quality of the banks’ loan portfolios is a significant positive factor.
